Web2Phone igns alliance with JENS
Web2Phone yesterday signed an alliance with a Japanese telecom firm
to provide free of charge Internet telephone service in Japan.
Under the agreement JENS (Japan Enhanced Network Service),
a data service arm of Japan Telecom,
will offer a telecom network for Web2Phone's Internet call service Tadatel,
which entered a full service Tuesday.
It routes phone calls over the Internet to both fixed-line and mobile phones
in 240 countries.
The alliance is expected to allow Web2Phone to offer services
at lower cost and access the carrier's broad user base.

Web2Phone advances into Japanese market
Starting Decempter, Internet telephone service operator
Web2Phone will begin its Wowcall service in Japan,
officials said yesterday.
The Wowcall service (www.wowcall.com) enables users
to make phone calls to both fixed-line and mobile phones
over the Internet.
The free-of-charge service presently covers
some 240 countries using telephone lines and
high-speed Internet networks offered by Dacom.
Web2Phone recently embarked on a joint venture
with Japanese investors called Internet Telephone Co.,
to carry out "Tadatel (www.tadatel.co.jp),"
the Japanese version of Wowcall.
The venture will be led by Shigaki Shigesama,
which will serve as an adviser for Korea's Next Media Group.
Most employees will be Japanese.
Internet Telephone Co. will begin with an initial capital
of 100 million yen, officials said.
The Japanese market responded favorably to Tadatel
even before Web2Phone began its test services.
Also, some 100 advertisers have already been secured through
forming a strategic alliance with Hakuhodo Co.,
the second largest advertisement agency in Asia, and Bunkasha,
a major Japanese media group, officials said.
"Japan is potentially a huge market
with the number of Japanese using mobile phones
exceeding 500 million, while telecommunication charges
are about six times more expensive than in Korea.
There is no comparison between the demand
for free Internet phone service in Japan with that in Korea,"
said Shigesama.
Web2Phone launched Wowcall in July last year.
It proved a hit with the number of users reaching 1.4 million
in just four months.
Gaining confidence in the domestic market,
Web2Phone has been aggressively seeking
to enhance its overseas business.
It plans to set up operations in more than five countries
by 2001.
The global Internet phone market, meanwhile,
is forecast to be worth $280 million this year
and to see annual growth rates of more than 200 percent
before peaking in 2004 at $16.4 billion,
according to International Data Corp.

Korean Internet phone companies rushing into Japan's emerging market
With the domestic market becoming crowded, Korean Internet telephony
players are flocking to Japan, where cheap Web-based calls are
still new.
Serome Technology, operator of the nation's first and the largest
Web-based phone service Dialpad, started operations in Japan
last month. Web2Phone, No.2 Web phone provider,
also began a test run of a Japanese version of its Wowcall service
last Friday.
Serome and Web2Phone claim 4 million and 1.4 million Korean subscribers,
respectively.
Smaller firms like Telefree, FreeWeb Tel and Kitel are also preparing
to advance into Japan, with plans to initiate services early
next year.
The growth potential and lack of established players in Japan
are the main attraction for the companies.
Telecom fees in Japan are notoriously high, about six times those
in Korea.
This is one reason behind the huge number of mobile phone users there,
estimated at 50 million.
Wireless Internet service is also popular,
with users of i-mode offered by NTT DoCoMo,
reaching 10 million.
"The high phone fees will turn Japanese to Internet telephony
that offers free-of-charge or far cheaper alternatives
to conventional phone calls," said Shigaki Shigesama,
chief executive of Internet Telephone Co.,
a joint venture between Web2Phone and Japanese investors.
Internet telephony is based on voice over Internet protocol (VoIP)
technology which takes a voice call, splits it into a number of
information packets, then reassembles it at its final destination.
Because the data is sent over the Internet, the service offers
cheaper per minute calls than traditional phone services.
The global Internet phone market is forecast to be worth $280 million
this year and to see annual growth rates of more than 200 percent
before peaking in 2004 at $16.4 billion, according to International
Data Corp.
While the services are popular in the mature worldwide market,
Japan is still an infant market and there are no major operators
except Serome, which established its Japanese operation in June.
The companies offer largely free services and rely on advertisement
revenues in Korea, where consumers are unwillingly to pay
for Internet contents and services.
However, Japanese Internet users are accustomed to paid services
on the Web. They expect to make good profits in Japan
by offering fee-based, high-quality services to Japanese users.
The major advantage of Internet phoning is its ability to
offer cheap international calls.
By establishing operations in Japan,
they could offer a wider range of phone networks to consumers
in Korea and the rest of the world.
But the outlook in Japan is not totally rosy.
There remain hurdles to cross before Internet phones
can enter the mass market.
The biggest is underdeveloped communications infrastructure.
With high phone fees, value-added service over the Internet
is underdeveloped in Japan.
- 22 名前: 名無しさん@電話にはでんわ 投稿日: 2001/02/10(土) 17:42
- Making alliances with existing telecom carriers,
necessary for the service, is also not easy.
Serome has yet to find reliable partners among
telecom service providers since the launch of its Japanese
operation in June.
The company has established a 100 percent local subsidiary
with a capital of 100 million yen.
"There are miles to go for us to see the Japanese market
fulfill its growth potential, and public awareness of
the convenience and cost effectiveness of Web phones
are still low," a Serome official said.
The company is banking on its status as the earliest
participant in the fledgling market.
It's planning aggressive marketing and promotions and
expects to find telecom partners and investors soon.
Though a late comer, Web2Phone is confident of its success
because of its thorough market research and business
preparation.
The company plans to set off full-fledged Tadatel,
the Japanese version of its Internet telephony that
routes calls to both fixed-line and mobile phones
with its network covering some 240 countries.
The company said its Japanese operation, capitalized at
100 million yen, have already secured some 100 potential
advertisers through alliances with leading advertisement
and media companies.
The Japanese operator is the first of Web2Phone's
international operations that it plans to open in five
nations by 2001.

phone-to-phone Internet Protocol (IP) telephony solutions,
announced today that it has achieved interoperability between
its products and the web to phone services of Wowcall,
a world-leading free internet phone service based in Seoul, South

Wowcall is partnering with telecommunications service providers

Telecommunications service providers terminate Wowcall PC

Users of Wowcall service gain access to a Wowcall webserver and
are able to make phones calls from their personal computers to anywhere

Wowcall earns its revenues by displaying streaming advertisements
to the users while they are making phone calls through Wowcall
website. Wowcall's advertising supported business model is similar to
that of an airline mileage program. Users click on advertisements
on screen while they are on Wowcall website,
and they accumulate calling credits based on how many times they
click to look at the advertisements.

Wowcall web-to phone system," said Dr. Peter Bohacek, senior vice
president, Product Marketing and Business Development, Clarent
Corporation. "The web to phone market is growing very quickly,

Clarent is very pleased that its open, standards-based products and
its intelligent software architecture were quickly able to
interoperate with the Wowcall application."
"Wowcall is also pleased and excited to be working with Clarent,"
said Yang Dong Lee, CEO & President, Wowcall. "Clarent is a market

provides Wowcall opportunities to form partnerships with existing
Clarent customers, and to launch Wowcall services in many countries
very quickly."
